Case Western Reserve University is a private research university in Cleveland, Ohio. The university was created in 1967 by the federation of Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University. Located in 10900 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44106, United States. Physiology and Biophysics is one of the premier basic science departments at Case Western Reserve University. With an outstanding international reputation for its scientific achievements and teaching excellence, the department also boasts several other exceptional features. This University is located in 40,000-square-feet of beautifully renovated space in the heart of the University’s School of Medicine.
The Department of Physiology and Biophysics traces its origin back to a division of the Medical Department of Western Reserve College, which was organized to enhance the scientific training of medical students. In 1888, it offered the first required laboratory course in physiology in the United States. The departmental culture of excellence in teaching and research continued under the direction of Carl Wiggers, MD who chaired the department from 1918 to 1953. During this time, the Department of Physiology became a leading center for cardiovascular research, attracting students and investigators from across the country. In part, this decline was the result of the elimination of department-based teaching (including the teaching of physiology) in the new, integrated medical curriculum that Case Western Reserve School of Medicine pioneered. In addition, rapid advances in other areas generated more enthusiasm for programs such as biochemistry. o continue its established tradition of research and teaching excellence, the School recruited Walter Boron, MD, PhD, from Yale School of Medicine as chair of the Department beginning in 2007.
Physiology and Biophysics are the cornerstones of modern biological science. The members of this department share a common interest in understanding how biological systems operate, spanning from the level of the molecule to the whole animal. university's mission education, scholarship, and service. Although our primary educational mission involves instruction to graduate and medical students at Case, we also provide training for local area high school students, undergraduate students form a variety of educational institutions, and many post-doctoral fellows who go on to lead their own research efforts at the university level or in biotechnology.

With more than 170 faculty, postdoctoral personnel, students, and staff from around the world, we are highly motivated to. Our students include candidates for three different degrees: the PhD, the Master in Medical Physiology, and the Master in Research Physiology. Although most of our Doctor of Philosophy students are candidates for a degree in our department, others do their research here, but are candidates for a doctorate in another department or an interdepartmental program.
Trilby's Svengali was a character of fiction. Conversely, Marc Breed, has captivated a generation with such a unique and engaging personality that we've allowed him the ultimately luxury of a true freedom. The Art he has created, as a result of this, only seems odd; in that we view it while tinged with envy. That we in Cleveland possess such a close-up look, should be a source of extreme pride. For we may live vicariously through his artistic rampage among us.
